Woohoo! Check out Surfability UK’s sharp new van!
Thanks to your generous support, Gumby Legacy were able to provide the funds for Ben to buy this much needed van after the original was deemed beyond repair just under a year ago!
Having this vehicle will make life slightly less complicated for Ben and his amazing crew. I say slightly because Ben and his wife are expecting their first baby in the next couple of weeks so life will always be differently complicated for them now! (in a brilliant way!)
Having the van means that Surfability UK CIC will be able to continue providing adapted and inclusive surfing sessions for people with disabilities and learning difficulties at beaches other than Caswell Bay in the Gower which is where they are currently based.
Our very own Aberavon Beach will be first in line with a summer holiday block planned so if you are interested then let me know asap as spaces are on a first – come – first – serve basis.
With 12 ft boards, bulky beach access wheelchairs, manual handling transfer equipment and an assortment of wetsuits, a van was definitely a necessity so we are chuffed to have been able to help and I reckon Gumby is pretty stoked too xxx
Surfability currently has between 30 and 50 participants per week with a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties. The kids absolutely LOVE it and we have subsidised close to 40 children since last years fundraising event and there are at least another 40 on the waiting list.
We made £1000 last year and were fortunate to have the hog roast sponsored. This year, we have not been able to find a sponsor for the hog roast yet so please, if you are able to help at all or can give me contacts to get in touch with, please, PLEASE get in touch!
If you are able to offer any other help at all – raffles, cakes, support in the water and time on the day are all needed and will be very gratefully appreciated.
We have surf spaces available so call me to book your child’s slot to avoid disappointment! 07738947622
Here are some videos of the winter sessions:
Check out little Charlotte seriously getting the hang of things on the wave rider at the LC2 during the winter block. Little Charlotte absolutely LOVES being in the water. She laughs when she wipes out and is patient and eager to wait for her next turn on the board. Charlotte has severe learning difficulties and is really getting the hang of this surfing business!
GUTTED that my phone ran out of space to continue filming big Charlotte kicking butt on the surfboard. I will be posting more footage soon so call this a teaser! Big Charlotte has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is dependent on her wheelchair to get around. Since starting surfing, her mum says that her confidence in other areas of her life has just soared.
Graceful entry into the water Ryan! We have decided to let siblings surf together IF they would like to! Ryan is big Charlotte’s little brother. Gumby was my best buddy ever and we loved doing things together. Often, families of children with special needs find it difficult to find activities that they are able to do together as a family but surfing is something that seems to work well as a bonding activity for everyone. As sessions have been over weekends, families have enjoyed getting out into the fresh air as a unit and we are so pleased to be able to facilitate that.
How great are these kids?
We want to be able to keep giving as many children as possible this opportunity so please help us achieve this by doing what you can.
