Live Your Life
So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion;
respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life,
perfect your life,
beautify all things in your life.
Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people.
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,
even a stranger, when in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.
Abuse no one and no thing,
for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die,
be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death,
so that when their time comes
they weep and pray for a little more time
to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song
and die like a hero going home.
Chief Tecumesh 1768 – 1813
Today it’s been 6 years since Gumby died.
Still hurts like crazy and still feels unreal. This poem was something he lived by. I often think about it and wonder if he died by it too.
I remember many times him saying to me “so live your life that the fear of death may never enter your heart”. It almost haunts me to wonder if this went through his mind in his last moments – what was he thinking when they held him? Did he say it to himself as he lay there knowing he was dying? I hope it bought him some comfort in that through living by these words, he wasn’t as fearful at the end as maybe he would have been if he had not thought about and pondered death beforehand as he did.
Also, they are pretty good words to live by anyway 🙂
The trial has turned into even more of a bonkers show unfortunately and looks like the story is far from over however for now, there is a sentencing scheduled for March 3 & 4th which mom is flying over for and a number of friends and family will be try to be there too. We’ll be able to share more once this part is over.
In the meantime, we carry on and thank everyone as always for the love and support we are so grateful to have and we hold Gumby’s friends who were with him in our thoughts and prayers always xxx
